Most of us never meet the person who made our jewellery. At Carolyn Codd Jewellery on Trinity Square, that is exactly the point. This family-run Nottingham jeweller has its own on-site workshop, giving customers the unusual chance to talk directly to the maker of their ring, pendant or earrings.

The team describes itself as independent designers and creators of fine bespoke jewellery, with more than 30 years of experience in design and manufacture. LeftLion has highlighted the shop as a bespoke jeweller specialising in platinum and fine diamonds, alongside a large silver range of earrings, necklaces, lockets, bracelets and rings.

Hand fabrication is at the heart of the craft. That means forging each piece by hand, without prefabricated parts of any kind, using metals chosen for durability so that pieces withstand daily life and, in the jeweller's words, "generations to come." There are several alloys of platinum, for example, and the workshop imports the most durable for long-term wear. Alongside these traditional techniques, the team uses laser welding technology to make even the most intricate designs, and visitors are welcome to ask for a tour of the workshop.

The bespoke service is designed to be approachable. There is no charge for design, so a piece made especially for you need not cost more than one from the shelf. Diamonds are a minimum grade of G VS, supplied by merchants who guarantee they are conflict free, and customers can choose their own stones with help from the team's certified diamond graders. The shop also offers lab-grown diamonds and a wide choice of coloured gemstones, from sapphires and emeralds to opals and moonstones.

Care continues after the sale. Every piece made in the workshop comes with a free check and refinishing service, items are assayed and hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office, and the business holds Assay Assured status.

For couples planning an engagement or wedding, it is a lovely way to create something truly personal, made by hand in the heart of the city.

Carolyn Codd Jewellery is at 15 Trinity Square and opens from Tuesday to Saturday. Collections, galleries of past commissions and details of the bespoke service are on the website.
