Ice Nine: Hockley's alternative corner shop for silver jewellery since 1979

Some shops become landmarks simply by being there for the people who love them. Ice Nine, on the corner of Goose Gate, is one of those places. LeftLion calls it Hockley's most recognisable corner shop, and it has been trading since 1979, proudly independent and proudly a little different.
The shop describes itself as Nottingham's original alternative shopping destination, and as LeftLion put it in April 2026: "Since 1979, they have been a jewel at the heart of Nottingham's historic Hockley." It is a fitting setting. Hockley's story as a working neighbourhood goes back to 1768, when Richard Arkwright set up a small cotton mill there, and today the area is one of the city's best-loved independent shopping quarters.
Silver jewellery is at the heart of what Ice Nine does. Its collection of sterling silver includes delicate necklaces and pendants, bracelets and rings, many set with gemstones, with pieces suited to special occasions as well as everyday wear. Alongside the silver, there is body jewellery, giftware and homeware.
The clothing rails are full of personality, from comfy knitted hoodies and psychedelic T-shirts to licensed band T-shirts, plus hats, sunglasses and scarves for anyone putting together the perfect festival outfit. Much of the clothing is fair trade, sourced by suppliers to ensure a fair deal for producers in other countries.
Then there is the basement. Downstairs, under the Ice Vinyl name, music fans will find a wide selection of records, including, in LeftLion's words, "many rare and unusual records", which earned the shop a place in its 2026 guide to Nottingham's vinyl stores for Record Store Day.
In a city that loves its independents, Ice Nine has become part of the furniture in the best possible way: a place to pick up a silver ring, a band T-shirt and a record in one happy trip, with the familiar scent of incense drifting through the shop.
Ice Nine is at 9-13 Goose Gate, Hockley, and opens from 10am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sundays. New arrivals are shared on the Ice Nine website and social channels.
