For more than a decade, knitters and crocheters in Nottingham have had a friendly place to gather. Knit Nottingham, the only independent yarn shop in the centre of the city, has been serving the local crafting community since 2010.

The shop started on Mansfield Road in September 2010, the brainchild of Eleanor, who was just 21 at the time, and two business partners. In 2016 it moved to its current home on Trinity Walk, and it has gone on to become a multi-award-winning business.

There was a brush with television fame in 2018, when Eleanor was approached by the BBC to take part in Interior Design Masters. The shop was given a full makeover for the programme, and because the show is still available on Netflix, new customers continue to discover it that way.

In June 2024 the shop entered a new era. Hannah and Dan took over as Eleanor set off on a life-changing move to Sweden. Hannah has been knitting for as long as she can remember, and she also crochets, sews her own clothes, dyes her own wool and is a qualified tech editor. Dan brings a background in marketing and e-commerce.

The shelves are stocked with yarn, needles, hooks, notions, patterns, books and gifts, with a focus on good quality, mid-priced products and the occasional local, artisanal find.

Workshops are a big part of the shop's life. Hannah, who has more than 20 years of knitting and crochet experience, teaches a range of sessions each month, from learning to knit to dyeing your own yarn. Teas, coffees and snacks are included, and workshop guests get 10% off in the shop on the day.

There is also a free Craft and Chatter session on the second Saturday of every month, from 2pm to 3.30pm in the workshop room. The shop is committed to being welcoming and accessible, with a ramp and a movable island in the middle of the shop.

You will find it on the walkway between Upper Parliament Street and Trinity Square, and workshop dates and the online shop are on the Knit Nottingham website.
