It is not the most obvious setting for one of Britain's great restaurants. Restaurant Sat Bains sits in a red-brick former farmhouse on Lenton Lane, beneath a flyover and close to the River Trent, a short drive south of Nottingham city centre. Yet for more than two decades this unlikely spot has been the heart of the city's fine dining.

Chef Sat Bains runs the restaurant with his wife and business partner Amanda, and the pair marked 25 years on Lenton Lane in 2024. The restaurant won Nottingham's first Michelin star in 2003 and its second in 2011, and in 2021 it added a Michelin Green Star for its sustainable practices. When the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2026 was published in February 2026, Restaurant Sat Bains retained both its two stars and its Green Star.

In February 2025 the restaurant was named the best in the UK in the SquareMeal Top 100 list. Speaking about that success, Sat Bains said: "The key is relevance and being proactive to push the boundaries of gastronomy."

The food is modern British and flavour-driven, shaped by the chef's travels. Guests might be sent out to the greenhouse mid-meal for a beer and a pesto and parmesan flatbread made in front of them, while desserts such as sweetcorn ice cream with miso caramel and passion fruit show the playful side of the kitchen.

After a refurbishment in 2022, the dining room was reduced to 28 covers, and there is also a six-seat tasting room and a four-seat kitchen bench. The site has seven bedrooms and a kitchen garden, so guests can stay over after dinner.

The restaurant has also been a remarkable training ground. Its alumni include Alex Bond, now chef-owner of Michelin-starred alchemilla in Nottingham, along with Gareth Ward, Niall Keating and Kirk Haworth. Head chef John Freeman has worked alongside Sat for 24 years.

"We like being in an obscure place because we have to try harder," Sat Bains has said, and that drive is a big part of the story. For Nottingham, it has meant a world-class kitchen on its doorstep.

Menus, room details and reservations are on the Restaurant Sat Bains website.
